Berwick History

In 1921, J. Douglas Berwick was a small business owner with a problem.  He needed access to reliable and cost-effective energy to power his business.  The existing gas lines were of little use for the new electric gadgets that his appliance repair shop serviced.  The latest technology of the day -- radios, phonographs, sewing machines, vacuum cleaners, washing machines and ranges -- required knowledgeable servicemen with access to electric power.

J. Douglas decided to invest in his company’s future.  He made the leap from gas to electric and brought cutting edge power technology to his home and business, which inspired friends and neighbors throughout the Pikes Peak region to do the same.  He applied for, and received Electric Contractor License Number 11 from the State of Colorado.  Soon he was converting homes throughout the region.  Berwick Electric Company was born.

Three short years later, Berwick Electric was low bidder on Grace Episcopal Church, St. Francis Hospital and the Modern Woodmen Tuberculosis Sanatorium (now the Sisters of St. Francis convent). By the end of the 30’s, Berwick Electric had helped remodel many of the downtown Stratton properties, wired some of the big new houses in the Broadmoor area and worked on a home for the nurses of Penrose Hospital.

In the early 40’s, Berwick Electric was contracted to perform the electrical work on the hospital at Fort Carson and survived the ration years of World War II with a variety of small jobs repairing old electric systems.

In 1946, James D. Berwick came home from the Navy and joined the firm.  Nine years later the company incorporated and he became president. The following decades brought rapid growth to Colorado Springs and to the company. Projects included the Chase Stone Center (home of the new Antlers Doubletree Hotel), the Holly Sugar Building, the Broadmoor’s Colorado Conference Center, and the Shepard’s/McGraw-Hill publishing plant. Atmel, Honeywell, Hewlett-Packard and U.S. West became regular customers.

Looking to the future, Berwick Electric began grooming a new generation of managers in the mid-80’s. James D. became chairman of the board, a position he held until his retirement in 1992. Today the firm is led by James L. Peterson, president with Douglas L. Berwick as treasurer.

Through three generations, Berwick Electric Company has led the way for each new technological revolution.  From electricity in turn of the century carriage houses, to high tech clean rooms and fiber optic cabling, Berwick Electric brings power forward one decade at a time.  Regardless of the technological revolutions that lie ahead, you can be sure that Berwick Electric will lead the way.

Generations.  Power.  Forward.
