Journeyman ElectricianWho wires the industrial plants and factories, the warehouses, the office buildings, the shopping centers small and large . . . and who's called when something goes wrong with the electrical system in such facilities? Generally, the call goes to the contractors. And to get the work done, they need highly skilled journeymen wiremen (electricians). That's why the industry created a five-year apprenticeship program - involving in-depth knowledge of all types of electrical work. Journeymen are in short supply, with the number reducing as workmen trained 20 to 30 years ago retire. Our industry has devoted hundreds of millions of dollars and resources to gear up and train more and more of these highly skilled electricians . . . the backbone of the electrical construction industry. As part of that structure, your career would involve interesting, ever-changing work, with opportunities galore. Telecommunications Technician/InstallerThe Web. Local Area Networks. Electronic commerce. These communications industries rely on great new ideas, high-speed access to the Internet. They also rely on something installed everyday by our industry: Wires and cables. That's right: with a three-year telecommunications apprenticeship, you could be making these systems work - and repairing, replacing, modifying and upgrading them - every day. Course work covers all kinds of systems, including fiber optics, fire and life safety systems, security installations, and voice and data technologies. When building owners and tenants have network wiring problems, they need a professional telecom installer/technician and he or she becomes the most important person in the building! As a telecom tech working for one of the industry's contractors, that person would be you. Demand for skilled telecom technicians is still increasing. With the technologies changing rapidly, this is a great job for someone who wants his or her career to include new information and constant learning.
